Researcher Junqiu Liu from Shenzhen International Quantum Academy wins the 2025 Fresnel Prize of the European Physical Society
June 17, 2025

On June 17, 2025, the European Physical Society announced that it would award Dr. Junqiu Liu the 2025 European Physical Society Fresnel Prize in recognition of his "pioneering contributions to ultralow-loss silicon nitride integrated photonics and its applications in nonlinear optics, quantum information, and frequency metrology, bridging fundamental and applied physics".

The Fresnel Prize, named after the great 19th-century optical scientist Fresnel, is the highest international honor established by the European Physical Society to recognize young scientists in the fields of quantum electronics and quantum optics. It is awarded every two years, with one young scientist honored in each of the fundamental aspects and applied aspects fields each time. Researcher Junqiu Liu has been awarded the 2025 Fresnel Prize in the field of fundamental research. The award ceremony will be held on June 24 at the European Conference on Quantum Electronics and Quantum Optics in Munich, Germany.

Junqiu Liu is a researcher at the Shenzhen International Quantum Academy, a doctoral supervisor at the University of Science and Technology of China, and an associate editor of Phys. Rev. Applied of the American Physical Society. He received his doctoral degree from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne in 2020, and his doctoral dissertation was awarded the Annual Doctoral Dissertation Award in recognition of "For ground breaking experiments in the field of chip-scale frequency combs and the extraordinary record of scientific accomplishments".

His main research areas include integrated optics, nonlinear optics, quantum optics, quantum information, micro-electromechanical systems, and microwave photonics. He has published more than 90 papers, including 10 in the main journals of *Nature*/*Science* and over 30 in their core sub-journals. His research achievements have been selected as the annual highlight works by the International Society for Optics and Photonics three times (in 2021, 2022, and 2024).

Since 2022, Dr. Junqiu Liu has been continuously selected into Stanford University's list of the world's top 2% scientists. The technologies developed under his leadership have successfully incubated a number of domestic and foreign startups. His domestic and international honors include the first PhotoniX Prize Young Scientist Award from the Chinese Society for Optical Engineering, the 2023 Shenzhen Most Beautiful Science and Technology Worker, the 4th Outstanding Young Entrepreneur of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, being listed in the 2020 MIT Technology Review's "35 Innovators Under 35" China list, and the 2020 Rising Stars of Light, among others.
